Lucille Ogle was born in Cleveland. She graduated from Case Western Reserve University and held a master’s degree from New York University.

She was a creator of the Little Golden Books, a popular children’s book series.

As the vice president of Western Publishing Company, Golden Books’s parent company, she helped develop the format for the low-priced books, which told simple stories and were among the first children’s books with full-color illustrations. The first was published in 1942.

Miss Ogle joined Western in 1936 and retired in 1969. Since then she worked as an editor and author. She wrote The Golden Picture Dictionary and edited the best-selling Golden Book Encyclopedia.

Edward Lear was an English artist, illustrator, author and poet. He is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose, and especially his limericks, a form he popularised.

His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold:

1. As a draughtsman employed to illustrate birds and animals;
2. Making colored drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; and
3. As a (minor) illustrator of Alfred Tennyson’s poems.

As an author, he is known principally for his popular nonsense works, which use real and invented English words.

Edward Lear was an English artist, illustrator, author and poet. He is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose, and especially his limericks, a form he popularised.

His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold:

1. As a draughtsman employed to illustrate birds and animals;
2. Making colored drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; and
3. As a (minor) illustrator of Alfred Tennyson’s poems.

As an author, he is known principally for his popular nonsense works, which use real and invented English words.

Edward Lear was an English artist, illustrator, author and poet. He is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose, and especially his limericks, a form he popularised.

His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold:

1. As a draughtsman employed to illustrate birds and animals;
2. Making colored drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; and
3. As a (minor) illustrator of Alfred Tennyson’s poems.

As an author, he is known principally for his popular nonsense works, which use real and invented English words.

Edward Lear was an English artist, illustrator, author and poet. He is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose, and especially his limericks, a form he popularised.

His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold:

2. Making colored drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; and
3. As a (minor) illustrator of Alfred Tennyson’s poems.
