Steven Spurrier RA was a British artist and painter. He was born in London. He apprenticed to his silversmith father. But after studying art at evening classes, he became a freelance magazine illustrator. He also illustrated books and produced posters for theatrical productions.

The four Swallows receive permission from their sailor father to sail by themselves on one of the English lakes in a telegram: ‘BETTER DROWNED THAN DUFFERS IF NOT DUFFERS WONT DROWN.’
