Mary Chalmers was born in Camden, New Jersey. Inspired by her sister’s decision to become an artist, she studied at The Philadelphia Museum College of Art and the Barnes Foundation. She was a successful commercial artist. In addition to illustrating children’s books written by others, she both wrote and illustrated many books of her own.
