Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, John Rae trod a well worn path to illustration, graduating from Pratt Institute High School in Brooklyn, then going on to the Art Students League and finishing up as a student of Howard Pyle. His work appeared in over fifty books as well as many magazines.

This is a robinsonnade written by a captain in the British navy. A family going to settle in Australia is wrecked on a desert island and the old seaman, Ready, helps them survive.
