Joan Hassall

Born in Notting Hill, London, daughter of the artist John Hassall, Joan first trained as a teacher but found it not to her liking and took up wood engraving. She became one of the foremost practitioners of the art and was called on to engrave the invitation to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Much of her work went to book illustration, including a complete edition of the novels of Jane Austen.
