One of the nine canonical lyric poets of ancient Greece. A Theban by birth, Pindar became one of the most famous of Greek poets. He himself would compose the music and dances that accompanied his verse. Among other honors, he was elected a priest of Apollo at Delphi. While the library of Alexandria held seventeen books of his poems, most of those which have come down to us deal with athletic victories.
