Edwin Schmidt was born in the 1920’s and attended art school at the Museum School in Philadelphia. He was a successful commercial artist and children’s book illustrator. He was married to the artist Evelyn Schmidt.

Bill Crane is just out of high school when he and his friend Ducky Davis discover a Caterpillar D2 in the waters of a Maine pond. Soon Bill has rescued the machine and embarked on a career as a contractor.
