Horace E. Scudder

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Horace Elisha Scudder was a prolific author and editor. He published “Hans Christian Andersen” in The Riverside Magazine for Young People and edited The Atlantic Monthly. He was the author of an influential history of the United States of America that was long popular in the schools.

Complete Writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne (1900)

The Autograph Edition, limited to 500 sets, includes 135 plates. The frontispiece in each volume is in color and also in black and white, the latter signed by the artist. The Old Manse Edition has only 100 plates but was printed from the same type and likewise limited to 500 sets. There were several different bindings of the two sets.
