The Earl of Shortlands (who looks like a butler) and his butler (who, naturally, looks like an Earl) are competing for the hand of Mrs. Punter, the cook. There are two other couples at the Castle and Hollywood comes into it. Wodehouse made this novel into a play for E.E. Horton, which was not produced so he turned the play back into a novel, The Old Reliable.
